Crawley manager Steve Evans insists his contract extension has not changed his aim to reach the Football League within two years.

Evans signed a new deal to keep him at Broadfield Stadium until 2011 this week after holding talks with an unnamed consortium who are set to complete a takeover of the club.

The potential new owners agreed the final details this week and are expected to tie up the purchase in the next few weeks.

Evans gave himself an ambitious three-year plan to gain promotion from the Blue Square premier division when he took over last summer.

And despite increasing his stay at the club, Evans sees no reason to change it following a season of consolidation.

Evans said: "I spoke with the new owners who are coming in and they made it clear they wanted me to be around and that has given me a lot of comfort.

"I have shown my commitment by moving my family down to the area and it is nice for the club to show theirs towards me. It shows people can see we are getting it right.

"I have spoken about a three-year plan and that is still the target. But you should always have a contingency and this is what the contract gives me.

"If next season doesn't go to plan and we finish 18th then it would be foolish of me to talk about being champions the following season.

"But I don't envisage that happening. With a bit more investment from the new owners, I am confident we can be competing for the play-offs."

Evans has warned his side they must stop the best striker in the Blue Square premier to have any chance of continuing their recent revival.

Former Crawley frontman Daryl Clare will be leading the Burton Albion attack against his old club at the Pirelli Stadium tomorrow.

Clare won the golden boot to help Evans' Boston United to promotion into the Football League in 2002.

Evans sold Clare to Crawley for a club record fee in 2005 and the former Republic of Ireland under-21 international scored 11 goals in 25 games, before leaving for Burton due to financial problems.

Clare has netted 19 goals this season and is likely to be partnered up front by fellow former Red Jake Edwards.

Evans said: "Daryl Clare is the best finisher in the Conference (Blue Square premier). People can try to take that acclaim but he is the one, I can tell you that.

"Every manager, and I speak to them all, would take him today. He is a model professional, he is from a lovely family and he will want to turn his old gaffer over.

"But he is not alone, three or four of my ex-players will probably be playing for Burton so you could say we know enough about them.

"Mark Greaves and Dave Farrell played for me and they are different class and have got energy all over the pitch.î Evans has reassured Burton's play-off rivals they will be going all-out for victory.

Crawley picked up their second victory in three games with an impressive 2-1 win over second placed Cambridge United on Tuesday and Evans is predicting a similar performance.

He said: ìThe only satisfaction (Cambridge manager) Jimmy Quinn could take is that he knows we will be trying our damnedest against Burton.

"Most managers would acknowledge that if you play for Steve Evans, you will certainly give your all."

Defender Dominic Shimmin is the only injury doubt for Reds, who are again set to name youngster Nick Carter on the bench.
