Albion expect to see Adam Webster finish the season strongly – after playing it safe with their centre-back.
Webster went off an hour into the 2-2 draw with Southampton, shortly after his misplaced pass led indirectly to the visitors scoring their equaliser.
Graham Potter revealed he always planned to take the defender off early after a series of illness and injury concerns, most recently with a calf issue.
The Albion head coach said: “It was unfortunate it happened like it did.
“The thought was 60 minutes after the time he has had with his injuries.
“He played for 30 minutes on Wednesday (at Manchester City) as well so it was important for us to have him available for the rest of the season.
“Sixty was what we thought was the right thing.
“It was just unfortunate the mistake happened a bit before that. You could put two and two together. I thought he did well.
“On the second (Southampton) goal, we can do better as a team.”
Webster has suffered a frustrating campaign having reported back for pre-season last summer feeling fitter than ever.
Albion have been careful with his minutes off the bench following his recent lay-off and Sunday’s game was his first start since mid-February.
Potter said: “It’s his first game back after a while.
“We performed well as a team in the first half and he contributed to that.

“Put some good balls into the front players, defended the box well when he had to.”
Webster could now retain his place at Wolves on Saturday while Tariq Lamptey also appears to be a contender for the Molineux clash.
Lamptey missed Southampton’s visit with a minor knee injury.
Potter said: “He just stretched his knee a little bit at Man City.
“He did it in the first half but carried on so we don’t think it’s too bad.
“Hopefully just days but (Southampton) was too soon.”
Yves Bissouma is now available again after a two-match ban.
