Adam Hinshelwood had a simple message for his Worthing players when they hit top spot in the Isthmian League.

He told them to stay there for the rest of the season.

That was back in late October with a come-from-behind win over Merstham.

Now, ten points clear with four games to go, they can secure the title with a win at Bowers and Pitsea.

It would be very sweet moment given they topped the table in each of the last two seasons when Covid forced a halt.

Boss Hinshelwood said: “I said to the players as soon as we got on top, that was it. We were staying there. We were not going to let up.

“Full credit to the players, they responded well in that sense and we have been lucky enough to maintain that position.

“We were eight points clear and I think it then went down to two at one point.

“The boys responded and we went on a good run.

“I think they key thing was we played at Carshalton and they got the better of us, didn’t allow us to play our football.

“From that game we changed shape and went to a back four and our run from then, apart from losing to Bishops Stortford, has been very good.”

Worthing will be well-supported in Essex and their remaining home games have been made all-ticket.

They are hugely exciting times for the club but Hinshelwood said: "We have just been trying to keep everything as it has been in the last three years, really.

"How we have prepared for every game and keeping it pretty much the same."

It could be a double Sussex celebration.

Hastings need a point at Faversham to secure the Isthmian south east title.
