FORMER Albion defender Mark Lawrenson has admitted the club's lack of goals is a major problem.

Lawrenson played for the Seagulls between 1977 and 1981 before moving to Liverpool.

Albion this season have made improvements in the Premier League standings as they are well away from a relegation battle and could still finish in the top half of the table.

However, a run of four straight defeats with only one goal scored has highlighted one key issue and that is the potency in front of the goal.

Albion have struggled to convert chances at time this season and have only scored 26 goals in the Premier League, this record is only better than four other sides in the division.

Lawrenson was quick to point this out to the Argus as one of the "major" problems at the moment but he did suggest that overall the club is improving and that they are in a healthy position.

"It is a lack of goals basically, isn't it? I think that is a major problem." Lawrenson told the Argus.

"There is nothing wrong with the defensively, and they keep the ball extremely well. I was at Old Trafford the other week and they deserved at least a point, if not all three.

"Goals win games as everyone knows, no matter what level they play at.

"They have improved though, every single year under the new manager, it is just frustrating how many of the games they have drawn.

"I would think it is frustrating for the supporters but if you said at the start of the season to have 33 points and be clear of the relegation zone with a quarter f the season left, I am sure they would have taken that as a Seagulls fan."

The 64-year-old believes the club are safe in England's top flight for another season at least but hopes that fans can see some positive results at the Amex Stadium before the end of the current campaign.

He said: "There is no way they are getting relegated this season, that is an improvement, and if they make that improvement every year, then they are doing something right.

"What will be really good would be if they could finish the season strongly and win some games at home."

Albion are at home for their next three games which will be against Liverpool, Tottenham and Norwich City after the away fixture against Manchester City was postponed due to the FA Cup commitments of the Citizens.
