Graham Potter says “teams like Brighton” can hope and dream of cup glory.
But he will not look further than a fourth-round trip to Tottenham for now.
Potter is preparing his Seagulls side to take on Spurs in a televised tie tomorrow (8pm, ITV).
He appeared to take a playful swipe at a suggestion “teams like Brighton” can target cup glory themselves as he answered questions in his press conference yesterday.
The phrase - sometimes taken by Albion fans as a sign of disrespect - was used by TalkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams, though on this occasion he was acknowledging the club’s worry-free league position.
Potter said: “It’s important for us - ‘teams like Brighton’ whatever that means - that you have dreams.
“You can hope, of course. We go into the game against Tottenham, because that’s all you can think about from our perspective, you can’t think further than that, and we will try and do our best.”
Albion reached the fifth round as a League One side 11 years ago.
They got to the same stage five times in their first decade at the Amex, continuing as far as the semi-finals on one occasion and the quarters on another.
That run to the semis three years ago coincided with a slump in league form which almost led to relegation.
Albion were 13th, seven points clear of the drop zone, on fourth round day in 2019.
That compares to ninth place, 15 points clear of trouble, this time.
Potter said: “It helps when you have got the points you have.
“The knife isn’t completely to the throat, as it has been in the past.
“That means you can take the games on with a slightly different feeling.
“Nevertheless, you still have to compete, still have to fight, win every duel in order to get points in the Premier League.”
