This is how Albion players rated on an individual basis in their 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa.
Jason Steele 7/10
Ideally a 7.5. Made a couple of sharp saves, was quick off his line and used the ball well with his feet, as we knew he would. Adopted a Ryan rather than Sanchez approach on crosses, which was fine apart from one weak clearance which fell to McGinn.
Adam Webster 7/10
Defended well, despite an early problem with his lower right leg, but was not allowed to advance the ball and draw opponents as much as might have been ideal. Ironically, one time he did ended up with Villa scoring.
Shane Duffy 7/10
Generally sound defending although Ings gave him the slip once in the first half. Looked like Bissouma, though well-meaning, got in his way as he tried to block the shot with which Watkins scored.
Lewis Dunk 7/10
More of the same from the skipper. Across the 90 minutes was strong in defence and composed in possession.
Tariq Lamptey 8/10
You know a player is a threat when the opposition fans cheer if he is tackled. Was a great outlet down the right, generally in advanced areas, but needed more to aim at alongside him.
Yves Bissouma 7/10
Back towards his best. There was a period late on the first half when he made four key interventions to halt Villa attacks.
Pascal Gross 6/10
Helped Albion keep possession effectively but without too much penetration. Filled in on the right after Lamptey departed.
Marc Cucurella 6/10
A mixed bag playing high up on the left. Delivered a great ball in for the Trossard chance but seemed to struggle defensively at times.
Adam Lallana 6/10
Tidy in possession but this felt like a quiet game for someone who has the potential to be a big influence.
Jakub Moder 7/10
Involved in two dangerous first-half attacks and has a nice knack of making space for others as he plays the pass. Might have done more to halt the Villa attack for their first goal in it tracks.
Leandro Trossard 6/10
Again the main point of attacking reference. Reacted quickly to fire in a shot at Martinez but generally found it hard to weave a way through for himself or others.
SUBS – Solly March 6/10
Ref was correct to wave away penalty appeals against him but he did not really get into the game.
Neal Maupay N/A
Sent on in a bid to win the game but never really had an opportunity.
Alexis Mac Allister N/A
A late entrance as the game drifted away.
