Decent - not brilliant - for an hour and then subdued until they were reduced to ten men.

That was how Albion performed as a team in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle.

But how did they fare as individuals?

Robert Sanchez 6/10

Probably did the right thing on the red card in the end having made the split-second decision to leave his area and then found himself in a hopeless situation against Wilson. A 60-yard ball for the raiding Cucurella was the best of his passing as the shorter game was closed down. His best save came when the offside flag was up.

Joel Veltman 6/10

Delivered the cross of the game in the first half but passing was poor at times. Not overly troubled at the back down his flank but was trying to protect the far post when Clark won the header for the equaliser.

Shane Duffy 6/10

Exposed by Shelvey’s pass and Wilson’s pace on the red card incident. We know the qualities he brings and defence generally looked solid enough. Sent a header at Darlow early on.

Lewis Dunk 7/10

Ended up in goal after a pretty sound defensive performance. Newcastle shut down his passing options.

Marc Cucurella 6/10

A somewhat erratic performance but there will always be some good stuff there. Was a threat at times in the first hour and was the outlet for the Lallana chance which might have made it 2-0.

Yves Bissouma 6/10

Kept things simple in midfield and did not have a bad game while short of the dynamic best and the imposing personality Albion probably require of him. A driving run at the defence in the second half offered a reminder of the force he can be.

Adam Lallana 6/10

Brilliant footwork to slip in Trossard for what might have been 2-0 and offered a lot of energy in midfield. Should have done better with a chance at 1-0 and conceded a cheap free-kick which led to the equaliser.

Enock Mwepu 5/10

Played as part of the attacking unit but was not really a factor in the first half and left the action with a tight groin.

Solly March 6/10

Another who did not especially have a bad game but was not as effective as might have been hoped. Tends to be more noticeable than he was here in what was a congested final third.

Tariq Lamptey 7/10

Employed more as a winger than wing-back, he had less room in which to work but showed a scintillating ability to beat defenders in small areas. Offers so much excitement but Albion needed to take full benefit before he went off, which was not the case.

Leandro Trossard 8/10

Unlike some colleagues, it sometimes seems he revels in a lack of space. Tricky and elusive in tight areas, he forced a penalty, converted it and was involved in Albion’s best chances. Unfortunate to see Lamptey’s well-intended touch take Veltman’s low cross away from him. Whether playing him as the main striker was right on this occasion might be open for debate but his skills, movement and current confidence levels make him a menace in any system and he was dropping deeper late on to try and make things happen.

SUBS – Alexis Mac Allister 5/10

Has worked hard as sub to secure more of a chance but did not take it when it came. Needs to be better in possession but did his defensive graft.

Neal Maupay 5/10

Despite the fact he got on quite early, it is tempting to give him an N/A as he barely got a kick after being sent on to lead an attack which, by that stage, was fizzling out.

Adam Webster N/A

Says a lot about his ball-carrying and distribution skills that Albion sent on a centre-back when they needed more creativity. But he could not punch any holes in the massed Toon ranks.
