Brighton suffered their first defeat of the season as they were beaten 2-0 by Everton at the Amex.

Goals in either half from Demarai Gray and a penalty from Dominic Calvert-Lewin secured all three points for the Toffees.

Leandro Trossard had a painful opening four minutes to the match after being trodden on by Lucas Digne and then smashed in the face with the ball from close range by Michael Keane’s clearance.

Neal Maupay, who was full of confidence heading into the game having scored in Albion’s opening two Prem matches went close to giving them the lead in spectacular style.

A ball fell to him 30 yards out and he span on it but unleashing a powerful effort which went inches over the bar and had Jordan Pickford scrambling.

Maupay was once against involved in a lovely attacking move, which saw him lay the ball off to Alexis Mac Allister whose effort was deflected over. From the resulting corner Shane Duffy headed wide from Pascal Gross’ delivery.

Robert Sanchez was then called into action for the first time in the match, as Mac Allister lost possession and Allan emerged with the ball he then picked out Andros Townsend, who found room to shoot.

But his effort was well saved low down to his left by the Albion keeper.

The Spaniard was then given a let off a couple of minutes later as his clearance fell to Townsend who then played the ball to Abdoulaye Doucoure, but he was caught in two minds of what to do and blazed his effort well over the bar.

Everton eventually took the lead in the 42nd minute through Gray.

The winger picked up the ball just inside Albion’s half and drove at the defence, before then firing a low effort into the bottom corner.

Calvert-Lewin, who had scored in the Toffees opening two league games went close to making it three in three.

Allan got the ball on the right edge of the box and neatly flicked it into the striker's path but he dragged his effort just wide of the post.

Potter made a tactical tweak at the break with Joel Veltman coming on Mac Allister, which saw the Seagulls switch to a back four.

That change almost paid off instantly with Veltman being picked out on the left after making a nice run down the flank.

He then played a low cross into the box which Trossard stretched to steer goalwards, but it was blocked by Holegate, the ball then broke to Lallana, who was fouled on the edge of the box by Doucoure.

From the resulting free kick, Gross’ effort was well saved by the feet of Pickford despite England’s No.1 diving the wrong way.

Veltman then handed Everton a golden opportunity to double their lead, after Seamus Coleman got in behind the defender.

He then bundled into the back of the Everton skipper which left referee Jonathan Moss with no choice but to point to the spot.

However, there was drama as to who would take it for Everton with Richarlison who had initially picked up the ball, having it taken away from him by Townsend who then handed it to Calvert-Lewin.

Richarlison was furious with that and had to be calmed down by his teammates.

Calvert-Lewin eventually stepped up and put his spot kick into the bottom corner.

Albion then had Sanchez to thank for keeping the score at 2-0 as Everton broke through Doucoure and his effort was well saved before the keeper then rushed out to beat Iwobi to the loose ball.

Trossard did find room to have a couple of efforts from range which were both well stopped by Pickford.

Maupay then had a glorious chance late on as he was picked out by Gross.

However, he could only poke his effort wide of the post.
