Team GB rugby 7’s captain Tom Mitchell, from Cuckfield, went off injured as they produced a sensational comeback to beat the USA and secure a place in the semi-finals this morning.
Trailing 21-0 and losing their leader Mitchell, GB scored four tries and three conversions to win 26-21 and take a step closer to a medal.
Ben Harris, Alex Davis, Ollie Lindsay-Hague and Dan Norton scored tries, with Dan Bibby adding three conversions.
They will now face New Zealand in the semi-finals after they beat Canada 21-10, with a place in the gold medal match up for grabs.
In the other semi-final, defending champions Fiji will face Argentina.
Team GB’s head coach Tony Roques admitted he is ‘not sure’ whether Mitchell will be available for the Semi final, which takes places on Wednesday morning (3am) but is ‘praying with all his heart that he can get back.’
The 32-year-old is one of the experienced players in the side, having led GB to a silver medal in the last Olympics in Rio.
He is one of just three players in that squad from Rio which are part of the team in Tokyo with Norton and Bibby being the other two survivors.
Mitchell, Norton and Bibby will be hoping to go one better this time round and win the gold medal.
