Robert Sanchez has been challenged to maintain his fine Albion form – and aim for the next World Cup.

The Seagulls goalkeeper saw his Euro 2020 adventure end on Tuesday night as Spain lost to Italy in a penalty shoot out.

His next target in terms of international tournaments will be the World Cup in Qatar.

Sanchez forced his way into Luis Enrique’s group ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga in the run-up to the Euros.

Spain boss Enrique has praised his squad members but warned them places cannot be guaranteed for Qatar.

He said: “Every time I choose a squad, the ones who come are those I consider to be the best or in the best form.

"They are the first to know that, if their performance levels go down or another player appears who is offering more, the possibility is that players will go in and out.

“I think generating competition is a good thing. This isn’t my squad for the World Cup.

“I’d like to arrive at the World Cup with a team as united and as strong as this one but we don’t know what the future will bring.”

Sanchez will come under pressure for his place from Kepa and Roma’s Pau Lopez.

The emerging Seagulls star has yet to win his first cap but has enjoyed a fabulous experience in recent weeks working with Unai Simon and David De Gea.

He said via social media: “A beautiful time has reached its end. I’m proud of this team and how well we have done. We will be back with more.”

Spain have three World Cup qualifiers in early September.
