FOOTBALL fans face disappointment after Brighton Palace Pier revealed they will not be showing England’s future matches at Euro 2020.
England’s semi-final against Denmark on Wednesday and the final on Sunday will not be shown on the big screen, which has become a popular place to watch the Three Lions.
It comes after scores of fans flocked to watch England beat Ukraine over the weekend - with the pier shaking as fans jumped for joy while celebrating the quarter-final victory.
However, England fans will have to go elsewhere for the next matches due to private functions and events taking place at the same time as the games.
Anne Ackord, chief executive officer for Brighton Palace Pier, said that while the pier will be broadcasting other sporting events throughout the summer, there was never any plan to show the final few games.
She said: “Hopefully there will be plenty of places that people can see them, or they can watch them at home.”
Covid-19 has already made it harder for fans to watch the competition, which was delayed for a year due to the pandemic.
Pubs are currently operating at limited capacity, with people either having to book tables or arrive early to secure a place.
There has been no return of the big screen on the beach where thousands of fans watched England at the World Cup in 2018.
A big screen had been set-up at Brighton Marina but it was taken down after England's first game against Croatia following social distancing issues.
Hundreds of people showed up for the match, making it difficult for the event to be Covid-19 secure.
The pier's big screen - in the garden of Horatio’s Bar - had become a popular place to watch England as they progressed through the tournament.
On Saturday, fans arrived from around midday to secure a place to watch the game - with security understood to be turning people away from around 2pm.
After the venue reached capacity, a number of supporters congregated outside and screens had to be put up to stop them watching the action.
During the match, fans were seen celebrating wildly as goals from Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson took England to the semi-finals of the European Championship for the first time in 25 years.
Afterwards, fans spilled out into the streets and there were raucous scenes including people riding on cars and shaking and rocking vehicles.
Many members of the public will undoubtedly have been planning to watch England's next game on the pier - however this is no longer an option.
Tomorrow’s match between Spain and Italy - which could decide who England play in the final at Wembley on Sunday - will also not be shown.
It is understood that this means that there is no longer a big outdoor screen in the city where fans can go to watch England play.
However, a number of pubs and bars will be showing the big match, which kicks off at 8pm on Wednesday.
