Alexis Mac Allister has been told he has an exciting Premier League season to look forward to.

But is unclear whether he will first fulfil either part of a double international target he has set for this summer.

The Albion midfielder, who was recalled to the starting XI against Manchester City in midweek, wants to play for Argentina in the Copa America and the Olympics.

He has been left out of the squad for two forthcoming World Cup qualifiers, seemingly putting his Copa place at risk.

The Olympics, for which he helped Argentina qualify immediately before moving to England, looks a more realistic target in terms of selection.

But that would cut across pre-season with the Seagulls.

Head coach Graham Potter said: “We always have to take the discussion with the player and we will probably do that at the end of the season.

“But his focus would always be on playing for us and getting as much game time as he can.

“And then he is a very proud Argentinian.

“He wants to play for his country in whatever tournament it is.

“But that is obviously linked to how he is doing with us.”

Mac Allister has been in and out of the Albion side and made only his 12th league start of the season when City visited.

His passes played a major role in both his team’s second-half goals as well as the early incident in which City full-back Joao Cancelo was sent off.

Potter believes there is more to come and made it clear that a key to that could be enjoying good rest once Sunday’s trip to Arsenal is out of the way.

He said: “I think he has had a good season.

“I think he will get better for this experience and he will come back strong next year.

“That’s what we hope to do. The players have had a long season if you consider the back end of Project Restart.

“They have had a short break and then this season again.

“The guys who have had internationals have had no breaks at all and it has been pretty full on.

“Everyone is at a point where they need a break, a bit of a recharge and hopefully get back to normal with the supporters. They can see their families a bit more and next season can be quite exciting.”
