Albion must strive to secure Danny Welbeck on a new deal this summer.

The former England striker has been increasingly influential as weeks have gone by.

And he produced a moment of high class to ease nerves at the Amex today.

It is looking highly likely Albion - with their fans - will be in the Premier League season.

They would love Welbeck, who is out of contract this summer, to be with them.

His gem of a goal on 80 minutes sealed a deserved 2-0 win over Leeds.

He had already won the penalty from which Pascal Gross gave the Seagulls a 14th-minute lead.

But there was a nagging sense of déjà vu as the hosts then failed to take chances to add to their lead – with Leeds then just hinting at a threat of a leveller.

Leeds' defensive work was not great as the ball went into their box.

But what followed was outstanding as Welbeck, to the left of goal and facing toward his own half, took the ball down with a Cruyff turn, span through 180 degrees and drilled a low shot across Illan Meslier.

Despite a terrific goal at Aston Villa early on, Welbeck's season was a bit of a slow-burner for a while.

But his influence, quality and eye for goal have been more apparent in recent weeks.

And he has scored a couple of crackers at that end of the Amex of late.

As ever, the only shame was that there was not a packed North Stand to herald a true moment of Amex magic.

That will change before too long.

That other exponent of the Cruyff turn, Gross, kept his calm for the opener with a spot kick sent unerringly inside the post after Welbeck was fouled by Ezgjan Alioski.

Leandro Trossard and Neal Maupay were guilty of misses for the hosts – but this time it did not matter.
