Neal Maupay says Albion will not settle for life just above the drop zone.

The striker has taken responsibility for chances which got away in the 1-0 reverse at Sheffield United.

Defeat to the Premier League’s relegated bottom team has left the Seagulls 17th in the table, still seven points clear of Fulham but by no means safe yet.

They would now be 14th had they won at Bramall Lane.

Maupay said: “It is a tough period for everyone and we just need to fight for it.

“I think we are in a good place but that is not enough.

“That is not where we want to be.

“We had a good opportunity to take a big step but we lost.”

Maupay was twice denied by Blades keeper Aaron Ramsdale and later sent a great chance over the bar from close range.

He added: ”I’ve tried, we tried and it just didn’t work.

“It’s not mentality, it’s not luck. It’s just a bit of quality really.

“We have the chances to score but definitely tonight it’s on me.

“I had a few chances and I don’t score but it is not lack of effort.”

Albion have not scored in 347 minutes but can pile pressure back on Fulham if they beat Leeds at the Amex on Saturday.

That game will be followed immediately by Fulham’s derby at Chelsea.
