Paul Barber is against points deductions as punishment for the six clubs who signed up for the European Super League.

Albion’s chief executive and deputy chairman was angry to see the big six go behind other clubs’ backs to sign up for the now aborted new competition.

But, should punishments be handed out, he does not believe that should be on the league table.

The Premier League and FA are currently looking into an episode which stunned the European game.

Albion condemned the ESL plan but Barber hopes any subsequent punishment is carefully targeted.

He said: “It is really important if there are sanctions that they are directed at the right people.

“When you start talking about points deduction, yes, of course it hurts the club but, more than anything, it hurts people at those clubs who have had nothing to do with this.

“The staff, the coaches, the players, the supporters.

“They are not the reason these clubs were planning to break away to a European Super League but they would be the biggest victims of a points deduction.”

He told the Albion Roar podcast: “Financial penalties are obviously significant.

“Potential suspensions from operating within the game are well within the FA’s powers if they go down that route.

HOW ALBION CAME THROUGH A TOUGH WEEK

“But I think it is really important we separate the sanctions from the clubs to some extent.

“Otherwise you are in danger of punishing the wrong people.”
