With former Albion fans favourite Frank Worthington having passed away last night at the age of 72 we have taken a look at some of his most memorable moments:
That goal against Ipswich:
One of Worthington’s finest goal was the one he scored for Bolton Wanders against Ipswich in April 1979.
A throw-in was flicked onto him with his back to goal on the edge of the box. The forward then did a couple of keepy-uppies before flicking the ball over the heads of two defenders and Volleying the ball into the back of the net.
What a character:
Worthington was a true maverick. He once turned up to an England U23s trip in cowboy boots, a red silk shirt and lime velvet jacket.
After one of his rare international appearances at Wembley, he famously obliged a young autograph hunter, asking: “What do you want me to sign – Frank Worthington or Elvis Presley?”
His love for Elvis:
Worthington loved Elvis and he used to play it on the team bus. But on one occasion his manager at Huddersfield, Ian Greaves ejected the tape from the cassette and threw it out the window.
He also used to turn up at Sunderland training ground dressed as ‘The King’.
Failed medical at Liverpool:
He missed out on a dream move to Liverpool after the move collapsed when he failed the medical because of high blood pressure.
He later conceded that it was due to “living a bit too much in the fast lane.”
