Graham Potter has praised the versatility of his Dutch defensive master.
He might need it as Albion assess their options at the back for tomorrow’s six-pointer against Newcastle (8pm, Sky Sports).
Joel Veltman will have an important part to play against Steve Bruce’s men.
The Seagulls will check on the equally adaptable Dan Burn today after he felt his hamstring in last Sunday’s win at Southampton.
Potter would love to have Blyth-born Burn back to face the club he grew up supporting.
He must weigh up whether to play a back four or his preferred three with wing-backs.
It appears likely Veltman’s willingness to embrace life at right wing-back or on the left of a three, in addition to his more recognised roles, will be put to good use.

POTTER SAYS CONNOLLY MADE A MISTAKE
Head coach Potter said: “The recruitment team identified he can play right-back or right centre-back. He can do that comfortably so that gives you a couple of options.
“Clearly as the season goes on you have a few issues in the squad and he can fill in. He has surprised us in terms of his attacking output in the final third, but it has been a pleasant one.
“The rest has been what we thought - a really intelligent footballer with a high game understanding and technical level.”
Albion are without wing-backs Tariq Lamptey and Solly March as well as central defender Adam Webster.
Burn left the action after 45 minutes at St Mary’s but has responded to treatment and will train today.
Potter said: “He could be available for the weekend, which is good news for us.”
