Neal Maupay has been urged to ignore critics of his goals tally – and keep doing his bit for the team.

The Albion striker has played a full part in his side’s six-game unbeaten run, although goals have not flowed.

Head coach Graham Potter says the Frenchman has been in good form since the turn of the year.

He said: “Sometimes we zoom into the individual.

“This individual should be doing a bit better or whatever it is.

“If you look at the team performances, Neal has played in games where the team has done well against Tottenham, done well against Liverpool, beat Leeds, played strongly against Aston Villa and Fulham.

“That’s a result of his performances.

“I think if you ask him then, yes, he’d have liked to have scored more, but every forward would say the same.

“Every forward has to go through periods when they don’t score. That is the life of a top player.

“You have to deal with those little moments where people can maybe doubt you or the negativity comes your way.

“You see it across the Premier League with other players who have cost significantly more than Neal Maupay. It just happens.

“That’s the life he has and he is strong enough to deal with it.

“The important thing for him is he understands his role in the team and he fights for the team and while he does that there is no problem from our perspective.”

Maupay saw two good chances to score pass him by when Albion drew 1-1 with Palace at Selhurst Park.

But some unselfish teamwork led to his side’s late equaliser, fired home by Alexis Mac Allister Maupay scored ten goals last season but Potter says his all-round game has developed since then.

The Seagulls boss added: “If you look at his performances recently, they are really good.

“I think he has affected the back line of the opposition as the nine, I think he has caused problems for defenders.

“His link-up play has been good.

“He has attacked the box so I think that has improved.”
