LEICESTER 1 ALBION 0
ALBION’S FA Cup run is over - after they conceded in the final seconds of normal time.
The previously solid Seagulls uncharacteristically switched off at a corner and saw sub Kelechi Iheanacho head home from close range.
They had kept Jamie Vardy unusually quiet for an hour but the man who replaced him proved to be the matchwinner.
Thoughts now return to the Premier League - and that is where they might have been in part as line-ups were chosen.
Not for the first time. Graham Potter caught plenty of people by surprise with his team selection.
Poland internationals Jakub Moder and Michal Karbownik were both in the XI to face the Foxes in the fifth round tie.
Moises Caicedo was among the nine subs.
Adam Lallana started but fit-again Danny Welbeck was only on the bench.
Leicester had early possession but the first alarm was in their goalmouth.
Percy Tau found a pocket of space to get an attack moving.
It brought a corner which Pascal Gross sent deep towards Lewis Dunk’s run.
Dunk headed the ball into the six-yard box and the hosts were at full stretch before getting it away.
The Seagulls had debutant Karbownik at right wing-back and Steven Alzate on the left.
Tau was looking to pick out spaces playing off front man Andi Zeqiri.
Good work by Zeqiri pulling away to the left led an attack which saw Karbownik right up in the penalty area when the cross came in.
But Lallana eventually sent his shot well over.
Albion had their share of defending to do and were keen to keep the ball away from Vardy.
Moder thought his effort had been deflected behind when he shot wide from just inside the box on the next attack as Albion got plenty of men forward.
But referee Mike Dean was spot on as he adjudged Moder got the final touch.
The Albion wing-backs continued to get forward well and Zeqiri and Tau found spaces as their side started to establish some control on proceedings.
But a second shot over by Lallana from just outside the box meant neither goalkeeper had yet to be tested as we hit the half-hour mark.
Youri Tielemans had a go from similar range and dragged his effort weakly wide.
Tielemans’ next effort might have given Christian Walton something to do but Dan Burn got his foot in the way and Gross then tidied things up.
Zeqiri went for the spectacular as he hooked an overhead effort over the bar when a cross was fizzed across the box by Moder after some more nice approach work by the busy Tau.
The name of Ayoze Perez was the first in Dean’s book as he caught Gross late on the edge of the Albion box after the Spaniard had been forced inside by Ben White.
Albion will have felt they had got into some good areas in the first half without turning it into clear chances.
It nearly took a freak goal to break the deadlock early in the second period.
A free-kick whipped across the Albion box by Tielemans hit Burn on the left knee and flew past Walton but safely wide of the unguarded post.
Tielemans was shown yellow a couple of minutes later as he caught Zeqiri.
Walton had to be quick off his line to push the ball away from Perez as James Justin played him in.
Both Walton and Perez were hurt as they collided but the damage seemed to be greater to the home player.
Vardy, Wilfred Ndidi and the limping Perez went off after an hour with James Maddison, who scored twice in the league fixture, among those to enter the fray.
Zeqiri was a yard offside when he moved on to a clever pass by Tau and lifted the ball over Danny Ward.
It was a very accomplished finish but was rightly ruled out.
Cengiz Under was clearly NOT offside when he was flagged after putting the ball past Walton.
But assistant Darren Cann had spotted the recently-introduced Iheanacho marginally off earlier in the move.
White made way for Joel Veltman as Karbownik continued to enjoy his debut.
His spring-heeled run led to Zeqiri shooting wide of the far post as he failed to bring back an intended curler quite enough.
Alzate might have brought the breakthrough but his terrific cross from the left was just a yard or so out of the reach of Tau.
Zeqiri and Under saw angled efforts comfortably saved as extra-time loomed large.
But Leicester came up with a big finish.
POTTER'S POST-MATCH VERDICT AS ALBION BOW OUT
There appeared to be a handball by Vontae Daley-Campbell in the build-up to the decisive corner.
But it was awarded, taken quickly and Iheanacho escaped the marking of Burn at the far post.
