Sussex boxing great and former world champion Alan Minter has died.
He was 69 and had been battling cancer.
The southpaw from Crawley became one of the country’s biggest sporting stars of his time when he was crowned undisputed world middleweight champion.
He won the title by out-pointing Vito Antuofermo in Las Vegas in March, 1980, and retained his belt in a rematch at Wembley before later being topped by marvellous Marvin Hagler.
Those world title fights were the highlights of a professional career which followed on from his bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics.
He was very much a man of Crawley, coming through the local amateur boxing club and owning a restaurant and wine bar in the town centre at the height of his fame.
