CRAWLEY boss Steve Evans is talking to former Albion defender Georges Santos about a possible move to Broadfield Stadium.
Santos is a free agent after being released by Chesterfield and can join Reds outside the transfer window.
Evans wants cover in defence and begun negotiations with the 37-year-old ex-Sheffield United and QPR stopper last week.
He said: "He is someone who is not on contract so we can sign him at any time. We are still chatting to him."
Evans is not worried about his lack of cover for goalkeeper Ashley Bayes after releasing Josh Clapham last week.
Clapham, who has been Bayes' understudy for most of the season, left for financial reasons without playing a league game.
Evans said: "Josh simply couldn't live off what we were giving him so we have recommended him to a lot of clubs nearer his home in the south west.
"It is all about affordability and I have no problems with having just one keeper. I did it at Boston and Neil Warnock did it at Sheffield United for years.
"You can make an emergency loan with a goalkeeper at any time, which is what I did at Boston with (Albion keeper) Michel Kuipers.
"I have spoken to a number of manager and I have three keepers on stand-by at any time if we need them. They would be with us within an hour."
Young defender Jamie Lovegrove has joined Ryman premier Margate on a month's work experience but can be recalled at any time.
Evans said: "People talk a lot about Jamie and why he is not playing but you have to remember he is only a 17-year-old kid.
"We want him to keep progressing as far as he has been since we came here and this will give him more experience."
Would George Santos be a good signing for Crawley?
