MATY RYAN 7

Made an alert and agile save low to his left to keep out an Almiron flick and was very secure right up until being caught in No Man’s Land at a late corner which Carroll should have headed home.

TARIQ LAMPTEY 6

Gives some pace and width going forward. That same pace can also help him defensively and he got in a shuddering challenge at one stage. Has been one of the successes of the restart fixtures but end product when he gets in behind defences is an area to work on.

The Argus:

ADAM WEBSTER 7

Almost complemented a good evening’s work defensively with a goal as his searing, swerving drive tested Dubravka. Looked unlucky to be booked.

LEWIS DUNK 7

Was only really troubled at the back by those late balls into the mixer with the big men up – but he wasn’t alone in that. Decent again and his unselfish header set up a good chance for Trossard.

DAN BURN 6

A generally decent job. Stood up near the end to usher Shelvey wide before blocking a rather hopeful shot as the point was protected. Can offer more than this on the ball.

DALE STEPHENS 7

A steady centrepiece of midfield barring one loss of possession in a vulnerable area which allowed Almiron a chance. Took one for the team with his yellow card and looked comfortable on the ball as Albion enjoyed a lot of first-half possession.

YVES BISSOUMA 6

Busy as ever in the first half, less noticeable in the second.

AARON MOOY 6

Started on the left of midfield and tried, with good intentions but not much success, to engineer a way through the effectively massed Toon ranks.

PASCAL GROSS 6

Popped up in pockets of space and flashed a shot across goal in the first half which might also have worked as low cross. But Newcastle were hard to play through and set-pieces did not offer any reward.

LEANDRO TROSSARD 6

Is still getting into some great goalscoring positions and this time tested Dubravka before being unable to get over a bouncing ball as he swivelled into a second-half shot. Looks more effective when more central. Promises much for next season.

NEAL MAUPAY 6

No clear sights of goal but he is always a pest and that could have led to a goal (or even a penalty) when he worried Ritchie into a basic error.

SUBS

GLENN MURRAY

Had more defensive tasks than offensive.

SOLLY MARCH

Offers a left wing-back option. Lovely ball flighted in for Dunk to knock down almost brought a goal.

ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER

Showed glimpses in his first outings but is still settling in and trying to feel at home. Producing better set-pieces on a consistent basis will help him in that process.

The Argus:

DAVY PROPPER

On for the later stages.

SHANE DUFFY

It won’t be the role he wants but is handy as a sort of anti-supersub, going off the bench to counteract any threat the opposition might throw on. It happened at Norwich and also here. Was beaten at the far post when Carroll should have scored but later got in a great challenge on the same striker.
