CHRIS HUGHTON has warned the gap between the Premier League’s top and bottom clubs is getting bigger because of finances.

He expects transfer fees to keep on rising, increasing the divide between the richest and clubs like Albion.

Seagulls chief Hughton told The Argus: “Probably the next few seasons will see that going to still another level.

“The big changes we have seen now is goalkeepers and centre-halves going for the figures that they are.

“You can imagine what strikers and attacking midfielders will be going for. So yes I do think that gulf is getting bigger.”

Hughton’s warning coincides with figures showing Albion spent just under £7 million in agents fees in the 12 months up to the end of January this year.

FA Cup semi-final opponents Manchester City forked out more than £24 million and title rivals Liverpool the most, a whopping £43.8 million.

Hughton believes spiralling prices will have an impact on Albion’s summer spending.

He said: “I don’t know if more as regards the big (overall) figure as such, but there is no doubt for any individual we bring we will have to pay more than what we did last season or the season before.

“It’s about how many will come in, but still this club is at a level that it has to act appropriately and with sensible figures within a budget.”
