Chris Hughton says Albion let a chance to ease the relegation pressure pass them by as they lost at Leicester.
The Seagulls went down 2-1 at the King Power Stadium, despite creating several good openings after going behind to an early Demarai Gray strike.
Jamie Vardy’s 63rd-minute finish proved to be the winner for the Foxes in front of their new boss Brendan Rodgers.
That was despite Davy Propper scoring his first goal for the Seagulls three minutes later.
Glenn Murray missed a sitter at 1-0 and another good chance very late on and Kasper Schmeichel produced a pair of good saves.
Albion remain three points clear of the drop zone and boss Hughton said: “It is a very low changing room at the moment.
“Sometimes you have to hold up your hands that you have been beaten by a far better team.
“That wasn’t the case. I thought it was a very even game on levels of possession and good chances.
“But the game is won and lost at both ends and, at the moment, if we are not putting away chances we have got to make sure we are not conceding.
“Those small margins are not going for us at the moment and it is only us that can do something about it.”
Hughton praised Albion’s spirit after a nightmare opening.
He added: “I’m delighted with the character because we didn’t start well. We made some poor decision.
“I think sometimes there is such a desperation to want to do well you can be a little bit too hyped up.
“We gave the ball away too readily and made some poor decisions in challenges that we made.
“But I thought the reaction was really good and had some really good opportunities to get back on level terms.”
Pascal Gross limped off after setting up the golden chance which Murray blazed over.
Hughton said: “He felt his hamstring, that we know, but how badly I don’t know.”
Survival rivals Cardiff went down 3-0 at home to Everton but Southampton will go level on points with 16th-placed Albion if they beat Fulham at St Mary’s tonight.
