Yves Bissouma said Huddersfield striker Steve Mounie deserved to see red.
But he had no problem with home fans booing him for the rest of the match.
Bissouma’s exit from centre stage was up there with Florin Andone’s flying header and Shane Duffy’s ear-cupping celebration as a memorable moment of the win.
His number went up in added time and he slowly made his way from the far side to the technical area, stopping to adjust his sock and then to clap the away fans.
Those in the away end cheered his every step – while the boos, insults, gestures and general vitriol rained down from the rest of the stadium.
Referee Michael Oliver showed red for Mounie’s foul on Bissouma on the half-hour.
Albion were then good enough to make sure that was the turning point in a 2-1 win.
Bissouma told The Argus: “What happened? Well, just as you saw. There was a foul.
“The bloke came in and the ref was right there, he saw it “I think for me, it’s red. The red card was deserved.”
In which case, the reaction from the home fans wasn’t deserved.
Maybe. But Bissouma understood why they went after him.
He said: “That’s normal. I’d have done the same thing in their place.
“I’ve got nothing against their supporters. They did their job for the team.
“The essential is we came here and achieved what we wanted to.
“It doesn’t affect me. I went about my business quietly and played my match.
“I don’t think about whether they are booing or not.”
Bissouma was brought in for what was likely to be a high-energy encounter against a Huddersfield team for whom Aaron Mooy makes things tick.
The Terriers set the tone for a while – but not too long.
Bissouma had plenty of chance to get on the ball and he tested Lossl low to his right with a shot soon after the break.
Asked about his own performance, he replied: “For me, the most important thing is the team. We won. That’s very good “Individually, I think I did a fair few nice things but that is thanks to the team. It’s down to the collective unit.
“But I thought we produced a very good match as a team and that us the most important.
“We understood that they were reduced in number and we had to attack, not sit back.
“This time was different. We were high up the pitch, we did what we needed.
“It’s always a pleasure to get a win but the focus is already Crystal Palace at home.”
Shane Duffy praised the way Bissouma, Pascal Gross and Davy Propper kept the ball, which is an area in which Albion have struggled at times.
He loved Bissouma’s reaction to being targeted by the fans.
Duffy said: “I thought he was brilliant. The crowd got to him and I think he took confidence from it. They don’t boo a bad player. He is a very good player and he’s only young.
“He’s a huge plus for us, especially when Dale (Stephens) is out. There is good competition in there.”
