New record signing Davy Propper has pledged to help Albion prove their doubters wrong by surviving in the Premier League.
The Seagulls have smashed their transfer record to land the Dutch international midfielder from PSV Eindhoven for around £10 million.
Bookmakers have Chris Hughton’s side as one of the favourites to prop up the table, with Huddersfield and Burnley, but Propper likes a challenge.
“Yes, of course,” he said. “I hope we can prove you all wrong. It will be a big challenge for sure.”
Propper, 25, also wants to show the Dutch still have a lot to offer, despite their reputation taking a hammering over the recent failures of the national team.
“I don’t know why but it’s gone down,” Propper said.
“It started with the national team, no European Championship and now the World Cup is difficult, but it goes on to the competition (Dutch Eredivisie).
“Maybe I can prove myself for this reason - but it’s not the main reason to come here.”
Propper is set for his debut in Albion’s Premier League opener against Manchester City at the Amex on Saturday.
“I’m ready,” he said. “I’m fit. I’ve had the pre-season at PSV, I’ve played a lot of games, so I don’t think it’s a problem.
“It’s my first game and I’m very excited for the weekend.”
Capturing Propper has made amends for Albion.
They were frustrated last month when they were forced to pull out of a record deal to sign Renato Neto from Belgian club Gent.
The Brazilian central midfielder failed a medical due to knee trouble.
Boss Chris Hughton said: “Davy has played a number of matches in the Champions League for PSV, as well as international football for the Netherlands.
“He’s a strong competitor and he is also a really good age.”
Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan and defender Shane Duffy have both broken Albion’s transfer record within the past year.
