Jimmy Dack is hoping his new striker can fill the void left by Danny Mills after making a clutch of signings for Whitehawk.
Pape Gueye arrives on loan from Sutton and joins Bayan Fenwick among Hawks’ recent additions Dack has also agreed terms with Romone Rose, Richie Whittingham, Trevor Elliott and Sean Roddy, all of whom will put pen to paper tomorrow, when Hawks host Hendon (3pm).
He is still likely to add more new faces ahead of the kick-off a week on Saturday.
But the squad is starting to take shape ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Hendon.
Gueye played in the 3-2 midweek friendly defeat to Albion under-23s and has also had stints in France and Belgium.
Dack believes he can be a handful for defences at National League south level.
The Hawks boss said: “Pape is a real athlete. He needs a run of games and we will then see the best of him.
“I saw him a few times at Sutton and he scored a few goals at the back end of last season.
“He is a good addition to what we have. We wanted that big focal point up top.
“He is very similar to Danny Mills. Danny had a great goals record and I hope Pape can replicate that because he has all the other bits and looks a good player.”
Fenwick was on the books of Crystal Palace and Cardiff after starting out at Lewes.
He has impressed on trial in recent friendlies and converted a penalty against the emerging Seagulls on Wednesday.
Rose is another who has been involved throughout pre-season and his blast against Albion brought Hawks their second goal when it crashed back off the post and rebounded in off keeper Robert Sanchez.
Dack said: “I had him with me at Newport County and he has got one of the hardest strikes I’ve ever seen.
“He wants to pay some games and enjoy his football.”
Irish full-back Roddy, technically proficient ex-Bournemouth midfielder Whittingham and no-nonsense midfielder Elliott are also on board.
Dack said: “The team will get better. We have been winning our pre-season games for 70 minutes but, as soon as we make six or seven changes, we are not as strong.
“I’m encouraged by the strength of the team but we still need one or two players.
“We have had to protect the players a bit in pre-season because we have a small squad so we are not quite match fit yet.”
