Lancing Football Club have ended a long wait for honours.
Ash Bailey’s side beat ten-man Newhaven 2-1 this morning to claim the Peter Bentley Cup at The Beacon.
It was the Lancers’ first trophy since winning the County League Division Two Cup in 1993.
They went ahead on six minutes with a goal from Tom Caplin’s free-kick which Liam Hendy will try to claim but may have been an own goal.
The lead was doubled on 15 minutes with an excellent individual goal from Lewis Finney, who made the most of not being closed down to fire home from 25 yards.
Newhaven were reduced to ten men on 24 minutes when Joe Dryer was dismissed for a reckless tackle on Jake Mills.
At the end of the first half Caplin almost added a third, his effort being touched on to a post by Jake Buss.
The Dockers spurned an opportunity to get back into the game six minutes into the second half when Lee Robinson’s penalty was saved by Josh Green.
Although Newhaven pressed well in the second half, they had to wait until four minutes into stoppage time to find the net, Callum Connor touching in Ryan Walton’s goalbound shot from close range.
Lancing’s Mike Williamson was named man-of-the-match.
