Gaetan Bong has been ruled out of Albion's promotion challenge until next year.
The left-back ruptured a left thigh tendon just above the knee in the closing stages of Saturday's 0-0 draw with Preston.
He had surgery yesterday and is expected to be out for 12 weeks.
Boss Chris Hughton admitted: "Losing Gaetan is a big blow for us, as he has been excellent and an important part of our success, and it is a huge blow for him personally.
"However, he is a really strong character and I've no doubt he'll come through that rehabilitation period and be back to full fitness for us in the New Year."
Albion have been struggling this week to find a suitable loan replacement for Bong, who has been ever-present in their Championship back four.
Liam Rosenior looks set to be switched from right-side midfield for Saturday's trip to Reading.
