Dean Bowditch could be back with Albion next season - but only on loan again.
The Ipswich Town striker is among the Seagulls' summer transfer targets and a deal is on the cards, albeit on a temporary basis.
Bowditch made a good impression during a loan stint with the Seagulls last November and December, despite a persistent groin problem which restricted him to only four appearances.
Boss Dean Wilkins wanted to re-sign him on loan earlier this year but Bowditch was still injured.
The 20-year-old has been in goalscoring form recently in the reserves at Ipswich, although the groin trouble has resurfaced once more and he is now expected to have surgery.
A return to full fitness would clear the way for Bowditch, who still has a year left on his contract at Portman Road, to rejoin Albion on loan next season.
Town manager Jim Magilton does not want to lose him for good. He said: "We have not lost hope with Dean by any means. We still feel he is going to come of age. It has been frustrating, as much for him as anyone but he still has time."
Meanwhile, Gary Elphick and James Fraser have been given trials by Bristol Rovers.
Elphick, the older brother of Albion centre half Tommy, has been playing for St Albans since the Seagulls released him, while James is the younger brother of Albion's rookie midfielder Tommy Fraser.
Albion make their annual pre-season trip to Worthing on July 14 (3pm).
