Albion boss Chris Hughton says the club’s chances in the Championship this season should be judged at the end of the transfer window as they try to tempt Blackburn’s unpredictable owners the Venky’s to sell winger Ben Marshall.
Former West Ham and Bolton striker Ricardo Vaz Te is also among several names the Seagulls are looking at to strengthen their attacking options.
They have been interested in versatile Spaniard Lucas Perez as well, The Argus understands, although he is reportedly poised to rejoin Deportivo La Coruna permanently from Greek club PAOK.
Albion have made two bids for ex-Leicester wide man Marshall, the second thought to be around £2 million.
Blackburn are still under a transfer embargo, imposed in December for failing to meet Financial Fair Play obligations, with transfer fee and salary restrictions for replacing players they let go.
The Venky’s sanctioned Rudy Gestede’s £6 million departure to Aston Villa but turned down a bid of more than twice that amount from Middlesbrough for his strike partner Jordan Rhodes.
Vaz Te is a free agent after six months in Turkey with Akhisar Belediyespor. The 28-year-old from Portugal is believed to be attracting interest also from Hull and Sheffield Wednesday.
Perez, who can operate up front, out wide or as a secondary striker, was on loan to Deportivo last season and will reportedly rejoin them on a four-year deal after turn to page 47 after appearing for PAOK in the Europa League.
Hughton said: “I think probably a good gauge for any club is always at the end of the transfer window.
“You always have to be realistic. What we would like by the end of the transfer window is to have a squad that can really compete in this division.
“We were fortunate to have two consecutive years reaching the play-offs and, of course, by those standards it was very disappointing last season, but the margins are small.
“Most teams in this division can beat the better teams on any given day and what we certainly want to be doing is challenging, in or close to that top six.
“We’ll certainly be giving everything we can to be there but we certainly need to make sure we have a good end to the transfer window.”
