Sami Hyypia has revealed how his new chairman’s burning ambition convinced him to take the Albion job.
The Liverpool and Finland legend is starting work as the Seagulls’ manager after signing a three-year deal.
He will put together an off-field team including first team coach Nathan Jones as he kicks off his first managerial mission in this country.
Hyypia was selected from what Albion described as a list of high- calibre candidates after extensive talks with chairman Tony Bloom and chief executive Paul Barber.
The 40-year-old former Bayer Leverkusen boss said: “The chairman is ambitious and for me that is absolutely key.
“I am now looking forward to the challenge ahead and our aim is to take the club forward to the next level.”
Hyypia has been impressed by what he has seen behind the scenes at the club.
He said: “I have looked at the club from top to bottom and I am very impressed by what I’ve seen at all levels.
“I’ve seen the Amex stadium and the club’s new training ground and they are amongst the best I’ve seen anywhere in the world.
“I’ve also already met some of the key staff including Nathan Jones, the club’s head of football David Burke, and Dr Helge Riepenhoff (head of medical and sports science) and I am very much looking forward to working with all of them.”
Hyppia’s appointment was confirmed at 7pm yesterday as expectation rose that the club were set to reveal their choice.
The 105-times capped central defender had emerged as a main contender along with experienced French coach Frederic Hantz in what developed into a two-man race.
Hyypia takes over almost four weeks after Oscar Garcia quit as head coach.
Albion were left with time to search for the Catalan’s successor and are happy with their selection process.
Bloom said: “I would like to thank the fans for their patience during this time.
“I know the fans were keen to see a new manager in place quickly but it was vital to take our time.
“I am extremely confident that Sami will be a big success at Brighton, and I am sure the fans will share our delight at his appointment.”
Supporters get their first chance to see Hyypia’s new team in action when they play their first friendly at Lewes on Saturday, July 5.
