Albion boss Dean Wilkins admitted today he is not sure when his teenage wonder Dean Cox will be back from a knee injury caused by too many matches.

The problem, as revealed on our website theargus.co.uk yesterday, has ruled the Seagulls' inspirational left winger out of this afternoon's clash against Oldham at Boundary Park.

Cox, 19, has been ever-present since he was suspended for Albion's first home match of the season against Gillingham in August as a result of a red card on the opening day at Rotherham.

A run of 26 consecutive appearances has caught up with the eight-goal playmaker in his debut season at senior level.

Wilkins revealed: "The doctor has had a look at it and it is an over-use injury.

"He is only a young man and the workload and programme of games has just taken its toll.

"The pain he has been getting is just above the knee on the inside, in and around the muscle.

"All the tests so far show there is no cartilage or ligament damage but this is what can happen when young players get put into a situation where they play a lot of games.

"It is too early to say when he will be back. I suppose we will have to try and manage it with rest.

"His contribution has been huge but we are pretty philosophical when players get injured. We look at who else is available and we just have to move on."

Cox's absence at Boundary Park today increases the chances of on-loan Dean Bowditch playing a part in the match.

The Ipswich player is back in contention after almost a month out with a groin injury.
