Nathan Jones reckons Albion should be among the early Championship pacesetters as they approach a twin test.

But Oscar Garcia’s sidekick is satisfied with the start made by the Seagulls following a traumatic summer.

Albion have topped the table after five matches for the last two years.

They are 13th at the same stage this time ahead of trips to relegated duo Reading tomorrow and second-placed title favourites QPR three days later.

Former Albion defender Jones, right, rejoined the club as head coach Oscar’s assistant a fortnight before the kick-off and days after ex-manager Gus Poyet lost his appeal against his sacking.

The Welshman said: “The start we had had a lot to do with the fact there were still a lot of things from last year.

“Everything wasn’t able to be put in place so that you start pre-season, you work towards a system and by the time the first game comes you kick-start and you are ready.

“We weren’t, we were weeks behind everyone, and we genuinely believe we probably should have four more points. Our performances have merited at least that, which would have been an unbelievable start to the season.

“As it is, we think it has probably been a realistic start. We are reasonably happy. It’s going to be an exciting and a difficult time, but we are looking forward to the challenge.”
