Elena Baltacha made a plucky exit from Eastbourne today.
The experienced Brit, on the comeback trail yet again after injury, threatened a major upset in the Aegon International when she took the first set off Russian sixth seed Maria Kirilenko.
Baltacha staged a typically gritty fight in a gruelling contest watched by a bumper crowd on court two before bowing out 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to the world No. 10.
British No.1 Laura Robson lost her centre court clash against Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-4, serving two double faults to gift the Dane the crucial break at 4-4 in both sets.
The last remaining British hope in the women's draw, Heather Watson, also went out, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 against Russian Elena Vesnina.
