Caroline Wozniacki is through to the second round of the Aegon International at Eastbourne after defending champion Tamira Paszek had to retire injured.
Wozniacki, watched by boyfriend Rory McIlroy, took the first set 6-2 and was locked at 2-2 with Paszek in the second set when the Austrian retired with a recurrence of left thigh trouble.
In the men's event Arsenal fan James Ward was gunned down 6-3, 6-4 by young Australian Bernard Tomic.
Eastbourne's Johanna Konta suffered disappointment in her home tournament today as she was knocked out of the Aegon International.
The British No. 3 lost her first round match 6-4, 6-3 against Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh.
The contest was littered with breaks of serve but the greater craft of the unorthodox Hsieh proved decisive.
