Justice for Omar - Introduction
The Argus and its readers are campaigning for justice for Guantanamo detainee Omar Deghayes.
The Argus wants to see Omar either charged and put on trial or released. Guilty or innocent, under international law he has a right to a fair trial instead of being detained indefinitely without charge.
A dossier about the 36-year-old prisoner from Brighton was delivered to Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, by The Argus parliamentary correspondent Daniel Bentley.
It included all The Argus coverage of Mr Deghayes' situation, dating back to February when his case came to light, as well as interviews with Mr Deghayes' family and friends and stories about protests, MPs rallying behind his cause and Brighton and Hove City Council's motion, passed unanimously last March, calling on the Government to take action.
There were also signed statements from MPs David Lepper, Des Turner and Celia Barlow stating their support, a copy of the council's motion signed by leader Ken Bodfish and copies of letters sent to Mr Clarke by Mr Deghayes' legal team.
The Brighton Save Omar campaign has been lobbying for his return to this country since March.
