A GROUP of youngsters are doing their bit to batter cancer through a touching tribute to friends who lost their battle to the disease.
On Saturday, March 12, the bunch of friends got together having recently lost two family friends to Leukaemia.
Jude Trigg, 8, and brother Ben Trigg, 11, both pupils at Westdene, were playing with their friends and neighbours Toby Thakery, 14 ,from Cardinal Newman and Sylvie Thakery, 8, a pupil at St Bernadettes.
They met up to play on the weekend and decided to sell goods outside the Triggs’ house in Redhill Drive, Brighton.
They took out old toys and set up a shop trying to sell them to the odd passer-by and they set up a sign Sale for Cancer.
Unbeknown to any of the parents, they had decided amongst themselves to sell their unused toys and donate the money to a cancer charity.
After a little modification to their sign to read Sale to Raise Money for Delete Blood Cancer, it proved popular and the front of the house became a hotspot.
They stopped cars, passers-by and neighbours, managing to raise £26 in the morning.
The kids chose 'Delete Blood Cancer' as this was the charity which was close to Ben's best friend Tom’s mum, Beccy Bidwell, who sadly lost her battle against Leukaemia.
The neighbours were so impressed that Melissa - mum of Toby and Sylvie - set up a Just Giving page to continue raising off neighbours and friends to a target of £150.
It took no time to eclipse the total and have now raised more than £500 and had donations from as far afield as Australia.
Proud dad John Triggs said: "What started as a toy sale outside of the house in Redhill Drive has really grasped the local community and shown that empathy which started with the kids can spread amongst the community.
"We are all very proud of them because it was completely unexpected.
"The thing that makes everybody most proud is that they decided to do it themselves. Nobody asked them to do it.
"There has been events that have impacted on both families and this idea has caught the imagination of the neighbours and community with over £500 raised."
