A 23-year-old was seriously injured after being attacked by balaclava-wearing men armed with machetes.

The victim was slashed along the leg during the attack in the illegal travellers’ camp at Wild Park, off Lewes Road, Brighton.

Police suspect it was the result of a long-running personal dispute between travellers.

One witness to the fight, which happened shortly before midnight on Friday, said: “Two people wearing balaclavas and carrying machetes entered the camp.

“A fight broke out involving a large number of people. The attackers were seen leaving in a silver people carrier heading north along the A27. At least six police units attended.”

Sussex Police said that a man with a serious cut to his leg was taken to hospital.

It said: “It is believed that two men wearing balaclavas attacked the victim in the park. The suspects are no longer believed to be in Sussex.”

Detective Sergeant Leon Ryan, of Brighton and Hove CID, said: “We do not believe this was a random attack and was the result of a personal dispute between the victim and his attackers.

“Officers remained in the Wild Park area over the weekend to gain more information about the incident and speak to any local residents or users of the park who have concerns about the incident.”

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokeswoman said that about 12 vehicles moved into the park on Friday.

The eviction would take place “as soon as practicable” she added.

Witnesses to the machete incident should call Sussex Police urgently on 101 quoting Operation Glassford.
