Church fundraisers chose a collection method from the 1930s to raise cash for a new noticeboard.
Pennies day organiser Janet Nowak invited parisheners and residents of Whitehawk to bring bags of pennies to the Coop in the Broadway for St Cuthman’s Church in Whitehawk Way.
The church was built in 1937 after children from all over Brighton and Hove collected pennies to help towards building costs.
Mrs Nowak said: “We raised £64.51 all together. It was a wonderful day and quite successful.
"Around 50 people came along from small children to adults and they all gave very willingly.”
A further £25.67 was raised by Whitehawk Primary School on Friday, October 5.
Tape was laid down in the shape of the church and children from the school were asked to lay down their pennies around the tape.
Mrs Nowak said it was good way to reach out to local people and that they were about a quarter of the way to reaching their goal.
She said: “We want to do the same penny trail in north Whitehawk to reach our target of about £350.”
