A teenage boy was attacked near Palace Pier on Saturday.
The 16-year-old was walking along the Lower Promenade, alone when the assault took place at 11.30pm.
He received a three-inch laceration to the head which required several stitches at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital , Brighton.
Police said they believed there was one suspect who was with a larger group of men.
The suspect is described as a mixed race man, aged in his late teens to early 20s, 5ft 7ins and of small build, with black hair worn in a braided style.
Police believe there were other people present not involved with the assault and are urging them to come forward.
Detective Constable Aran Boyt said: "This was a nasty attack on a lone teenager who was celebrating the Pride Festival. The reasons for why he was targeted are not clear at this time."
