A traveller encampment has moved onto an open space at the heart of a community – and it could remain there for weeks.
About 20 caravans moved into Saltdean Park in Brighton on Tuesday evening (July 17) after they were evicted from East Brighton Park.
Brighton and Hove City Council applied to Sussex Police to evict the group under its special section 61 powers at 1pm yesterday (July 18).
However, the local authority was told at about 5pm this would not happen. It means the council will now have to spend taxpayers’ money obtaining a court order to evict the group.
One parent said she would have to cancel a leaving celebration for children leaving Saltdean Primary School, while there were concerns about the encampment’s closeness to two nurseries in the park.
