I RECENTLY attended a consultation to show the many changes being proposed for Lewes Road in Brighton, from the university sites down to the Vogue Gyratory system.
I asked how many replies were expected from the questionnaires that had been sent out, and was told 20% of those sent were likely to come back.
I said this couldn’t be a fair representation of the feelings about the scheme but was assured the scheme would be debated at a Brighton and Hove City Council committee at meeting some point in the future.
I felt then that the proposed cycle lane as part of this was a certainty.
The next day I was amazed to find all the sunken drain covers and potholes which had been there for years were repaired, giving a virtually bump-free drive from the university sites down towards the Vogue Gyratory.
This looks great until you see that the majority of the work has been carried out in the new proposed cycle lane area – bearing in mind this still has to go before a committee.
I wonder now if this was a done deal all along and that, along with many others, I wasted my time going to the display and filling out a questionnaire.
