A stag party member has been accused of singeing a friend’s hair on a flight for a prank, causing the aircraft to be diverted.
The victim, not the groom-to-be, was not injured in the incident which took place yesterday on a flight between Manchester and Palma, Majorca.
However, the aeroplane filled with smoke and it had to be diverted.
It landed at Gatwick.
A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: “A man was on board a Monarch airline flight travelling from Manchester to Palma yesterday and caused the aircraft to be diverted to Gatwick when he singed the hair of another passenger who he was travelling with and the smell of smoke filtered around the cabin.
“Sussex Police officers boarded the aircraft in Gatwick shortly after 9am and a man was arrested on suspicion of endangering an aircraft.”
Colin Jones, 24, of Mottershead Road, Widnes, Cheshire, has been charged with reckless/negligent behaviour likely to endanger an aircraft and other people in the aircraft.
He has been bailed to appear at Hayward Heath Magistrates' Court on June 15.
