Jubilee celebrations could be affected by an unauthorised traveller encampment.
A group of caravans set up home in Carden Park, Brighton, near the Old Boat Corner Community Centre, last week.
Brighton and Hove City Council said it acted immediately to request Sussex Police use their powers to move the travellers to vacant pitches at Horsdean transit site.
But before the request could be carried out the encampment had grown too big for the number of plots available at the permanent site.
Locals said the events planned for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Sunday, June 3 and Monday, June 4 would have to be “scaled back” as a result.
The local authority said it had formally asked the group to move by 10am today (May 31).
Pete West, chairman of the council’s environment and sustainability committee, said: “If the travellers fail to move the council will make a formal request to the police that they consider using their emergency powers to move the encampment before the weekend.”
