A football club chairman has pledged that a football tournament will still go ahead.
Mile Oak Wanderers had hoped to play an adult five-a-side tournament at its home at Southwick Hill recreation ground on Monday to raise funds for a new training kit for the 200 boys and girls who play at the club.
However, an unauthorised encampment of travellers has been established on the land off Mile Oak Gardens in Portslade.
Robin Buckwell, the chairman of the club, said: “We would love to be able to provide the training kit to the kids without their parents, many of whom are struggling to make ends meet financially at present, having to pay for them.
“We are hopeful this can still go ahead elsewhere with the support of our friends from the local Mile Oak and Portslade community.”
Brighton and Hove City Council said the owner of the land, Portslade Aldridge Community Academy, was liaising with the police to manage the encampment.
