AS A former parking attendant, I am aware of the dangers of school parking.
The story in The Argus last Wednesday highlights this.
The selfishness of school-run driving is unbelievable.
I often incurred the fury of parents who arrived at a school up to one hour before the scheduled finishing time.
These drivers parked on yellow lines and zig zags. This seemed to generally happen for social reasons – so people could discuss the previous night’s television.
When confronted they would become offensive and claim they had the headteacher’s permission to park in this manner.
It must be pointed out that the headteacher has no jurisdiction over parking on a public road. In fact, most schools strongly discourage parking directly outside their premises.
Inappropriate parking is always dangerous.
Outside schools it creates a danger for pedestrians young and old and can deny access to emergency service vehicles.
