IN RESPONSE to your story about allotments (The Argus, May 18), there are allotments in the road I live in which are very well looked after.

There is a piece of land next to these allotments which, we were told, was being saved to extend the existing allotments, allowing the many people on waiting lists to have their very own piece of land.

Now we hear Lewes District Council has no spare money to complete these allotments, which means this land could be used for further unwanted housing development.

Why not divide this land into however many allotments this could possibly allow and let each person wanting one come and dig it out themselves?

At no cost to the council, this sounds like a good idea to me.
