At the turn of the last century, author Rudyard Kipling was a celebrity equal to leading pop stars of today.
Leaders of charabanc trips would point out his house in Rottingdean and postcards like this were produced.
Kipling, an intensely private man, disliked all the publicity.
He spent the second half of his life at Bateman’s in Burwash, a much more secluded spot.
Gardens of his former home were scheduled for housing in the 1980s but Rottingdean Preservation Society bought them so that they now are open to the public.
