A shopkeeper was fined £80 for selling alcohol to a drunk man.

Sergeant Nev Whiteley told a 41-year-old man who had been drinking to go home when he was on duty in Southgate, Crawley.

He then saw him go into the Handy Corner shop in East Park where the man bought a can of cider.

Sgt Whiteley gave the 37-year-old staff member an £80 fine for selling to a person who had been drinking. He said: “Selling alcohol to drunks is unacceptable as it can have a direct impact on behaviour in communities. We do work in partnership with the local authority over licensed premises and most are very cooperative and responsible.

“However, this was a blatant offence where I had to take immediate action.”
